Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education for Youth

Our mission is to understand the underlying biology of concussion to inform targeted treatments and improve outcomes for children and adolescents

What is CARE4Kids?

Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE)

CARE4Kids is a nationwide NIH-funded study that focuses on improving how we detect, manage, and prevent persistent post-concussion symptoms in adolescents aged 11 to 17. By analyzing objective biological traits and self-reported changes, our research aims to identify youth at-risk for longer post-concussion recovery much earlier than currently possible. Ultimately, we hope to develop a predictive screening tool to help clinicians deliver timely treatments and improve recovery outcomes.

Cohort Demographics and Enrollment

The CARE4Kids study brings together a diverse cohort of adolescents from multiple clinical sites nationwide to track concussion recovery. The data below represents our current enrollment numbers and participant demographics, offering a transparent look at who makes up our research community. Tracking this diversity is essential to ensure our findings and future treatments are effective for all youth, regardless of their background.

Who can participate?

Eligible participants are symptomatic youth (ages 11–17) presenting within 35 days of a provider-diagnosed concussion. Families must speak English or Spanish.

What does it involve?

This study measures autonomic nervous system function, blood biomarkers, and brain connectivity using neuroimaging (MRI).

What progress has been made?

We have launched our national protocol, found key sex differences in youth recovery biomarkers, and validated less invasive blood collection method to be used in our study.

Who is our participant community?
